Syd is a troubled teen, struggling with a myriad of psychological issues (most of which he refuses to admit are typical teenager problems). He is hardened and crass on the outside but has an incredibly soft heart, showcased in his love for Taehyun, his mother, and his cat Arlene.

Discovering just how much of his brash personality is a front to keep people away is something he struggles with; he often makes violent, graphic threats when provoked but will not act on them; a dark part of him thrives on being the "psycho" kid, as this reputation makes bullies give him a wide berth.

He writes his innermost thoughts and feelings in a private journal. He has a deep fascination with death, morbid and macabre subjects. He spends a lot of time on the computer, creating custom Doom levels and browsing sites like Rotten and Ogrish.

His parents split up when he was around 12-13. His father, Wade, had an extramarital affair and eventually moved to Kansas City with his new wife, Susan, and her son Brooks. Syd partially resents his father for abandoning both him and his mother, yet part of him still longs for his father's love. As a result, Syd is very close with his mother Misty.

In eighth grade, Syd staged a fake suicide. He had a crush on a classmate, Rachel Larson, and slid an anonymous note confessing his feelings into her locker. She read it over the school announcements the following day. The only saving grace regarding this humiliation was his anonymity was kept intact, though as all his classmates laughed he felt like they knew. "I knew I wouldn’t be able to make it to the end of the day without breaking. I used ketchup packets as blood and faked a suicide in the cafeteria. I just needed a way to get sent home without getting in trouble. I got suspended for a few days and made to go to counseling before I could go back to school."

He was in an advanced program for "gifted" kids in elementary school and hated it, but he stuck it out for a few years for his parents' sake; he prefers being in regular classes because there, everyone thinks he’s a genius. He’s the smart kid. In an AP class, he’d be the dummy, or just another smart kid in a class full of them. He wouldn’t be special.

He knows a handful of Korean love phrases/words due to his friendship/romance with Taehyun
